Jasmin Vardimon Company commissioned three exciting female choreographers who have worked with the company in a variety of roles to choreograph pieces for fourteen hand-picked JV2 dancers.
Former Jasmin Vardimon Company dancer Mafalda Deville’s work Silence was originally created in 2013 and is an athletic and gutsy work, dealing with loss and longing that punches with a strong visual style alongside music from Marilyn Manson and Tchaikovsky.
‘Unregistered Traces’ by Athanasia Kanellopoulou
Traces of life travelled through the bodies of people. Disordered and interior movements bring them in a physical state of exhaustion. They keep travelling through the space; they keep searching until they find the longing moment of stillness. The insignificance that surrounds them is the key to wisdom. The space calls them in a continuous search until they find serenity. The instant moment becomes a space for exploring, hunting, diving, burning. Repetitive movements increase and take the energy in new dimensions. When is it enough? When should I stop? Do you shake or do you keep still? A common space where breath turns into energy, into anticipation, into stillness.
‘I was, Minus All’ by Marilena Dara
Victims of our own invention, time. The heart cannot conceptualize time, it only feels absence. Bodies under tension, repeating themselves, ultimately giving in to their own brokenness nonetheless revolting through their own beauty. Thousands of moments, suspended in a wash of sound, a landscape of relationships, of distance, of humans and emptiness, of decision. The viewer inhabits and alters, through their stillness or speed, their sense of proportion and time, the configurations that make up this constantly shifting, ecstatic world where one is minus all.
JV2 Co-Course Leader Marilena Dara and former Jasmin Vardimon Company dancer Athanasia Kanellopoulou created powerful new works specifically for the 2015 Company tour.
